What is NLP?

Paul McKenna defines NLP as follows:

  • The “N” stands for neuro - “The nervous system through which experience is received and processed through the 5 senses”

  • The “L” stands for linguistic - “The language and non-verbal communication systems through which we code and make sense of our experience”.

  • The “P” stands for programming - “The ability to organise our communications and neurological systems to achieve specific desired goals and results”.

So … we see, hear, feel, smell and taste our way through our day. We make sense of it all by thinking, predominantly with language, talking to ourselves and to those around us. And we have programmes of behaviour which follow from this.

Let’s have some examples using issues people come to us with:

Do you eat too much?

  • You see food, hear the crackle of it frying, smell it as it wafts around the house, feel it as you chew it, and enjoy the taste. How do you process “that food” in your head? What do you think about it… is it fuel? Comfort? Fun? Tedious? And what eating patterns do you have? Must you clear the plate? Have seconds? Pick at bits? Only eat junk?

Do you have problems relating to someone?

  • You see them, hear them, sense them, even smell them… as you think of them what are you saying about them in your head? And what habitual patterns or programmes of behaviour do they trigger in you?

And what about exercise?

  • What feelings do you get during exercise? How do you think about that … is pain great because it means you’re working hard and getting fit? Or is pain simply pain and you’d rather sit down and rest? And what patterns of behaviour do you have round exercise - can you do it for a couple of days but never really see it through?

So what about NLP? … using simple but powerful techniques you can  change how you see, hear and feel what you do, changing behaviour patterns you’ve been plagued with for years - you can get a passion for change…
